Restoration estimators scope water, fire, and mould losses, write carrier-standard estimates in Xactimate, and negotiate claims with adjusters. It is a specialization within the broader estimator occupation, and the software and certifications are what make it a distinct, well-paid role. Here is the path.
Understand the role
Restoration estimator is a specialization within NOC 22303, construction and cost estimators. What separates it from generic construction estimating is the insurance-claims context: you scope losses to carrier documentation standards, price them in Xactimate, and defend the estimate through the claims process. Insurance estimators and property-claims estimators do closely related work with the same tools.
Get the software (the key credential)
- Xactimate is the dominant estimating platform, and Level 2 certification is the credential employers look for
- Learn the secondary platforms too: Symbility, DASH, and iGuide
- Build fluency in sketch, scope, and line-item pricing to carrier standards
Earn the IICRC certifications
The IICRC certifications are the restoration knowledge base that a credible estimate rests on.
- WRT, Water Damage Restoration Technician
- FSRT, Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician
- AMRT, Applied Microbial Remediation Technician, for mould
- ASD, Applied Structural Drying Technician
- Asbestos awareness and hazard documentation
Build the claims and documentation skills
- Learn insurance-carrier documentation standards and what a carrier will and will not pay
- Practice scope-of-work writing that is clear, complete, and defensible
- Develop claims-negotiation skill, since the estimate is the basis of the settlement
Land your first role
Apply to restoration and reconstruction firms, both franchise locations and independents, and to insurance carriers and adjusting firms hiring property-claims estimators. Emphasize your Xactimate level, your IICRC certifications, and any field restoration or claims experience. Set up a job alert on a board built for the role so new openings reach you before they fill, because credentialed estimators are in steady demand and firms hire quickly when one appears.
